SPECIES:
The Breen are a humanoid race, that stand the same height as humans. They have been called a warrior race. They are considered to have a civilization of warroirs. The Breen come from a planet with the same name, which has a polar environment. A powerful and mysterious Alpha Quadrant species, the Breen are one of the few major races who have evolved on a non-class M world. The Breen home world has an average temperature of approximately 220 kelvin, a record low for any inhabited planet. Much of Breen is known to be a complete wasteland, and it is speculated that they have deliberately avoided large scale surface developement due to cultural reasons. They have evolved with a unique physiology in order to cope with the ultra cold environment. They breathe a fairly standard oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere close to our normal pressure. The Breen have no blood or circulatory system. Instead their body is permeated by millions of tiny hollow tubules which are open to the skin. This allows for oxygen to be carried directly into the body, once there it is absorbed directly through the skin to be used by the internal organs. The waste gasses are expelled in the same way. The Breen reproductive cycle is also unusual, because they commonly produce offspring at early ages. Normal Breen body temperature is 235 kelvin and the exposure to temperatures above 260 kelvin will kill a Breen within minutes. Because most known space-faring species live on class M planets with an average temperature far above that of the Breen, they have had to develop environmental suits of geat capability, endurance and reliability in order to co-exist with others. Given their nature, the Breen are considered experts of the Quadrant of creating and maintaining extremely cold environments. Given the intense cold of the planet Breen, non-Breen visits to the world does not exist. The Breen are extremely paranoid about their borders and if they are breached, they respond with deadly force. Anyone captured within their territory is confined.
The Breen portray a sense of mystery to other species in the Galaxy as the environmental suits they wear covers their faces and sceambles their voice to appear as a mechanical jarble. Also, the Breen are resistant to mind probes by empathic species, making them a complete mystery.
Nevertheless, much has been discovered about the Breen over the years. They have developed organic technology that is incorporated into their spacecraft. Their arsenal includes cloaking technology, developed independently of the Klingons and Romulans. They use a disruptor type weapon that is similar to the Klingons and Romulans. They have also an energy-dampening device that renders a ship powerless as it causes energy cores to stall, rendering opposing ships defenceless. Breen space encopasses a large area of the Alpha Quadrant and their nearest territories to Federation space include the Demiliterized Zone and the Black Cluster.
The Breen recently joined the Dominion and immediately became a major force in the war between the Dominion and the Federation. They were promised large areas of the Alpha Quadrant by the Dominion including Earth and Romulus. On their first offensive they attacked Starfleet command at Earth. On their second offensive, they retook the Chin'toka star system. The Breen were on the losing end of the war and it is unknown what their exact losses were, they were involved for a short period of the war. The concessions that they made with the signing of the peace treaty was one sector of space to each of the Federation, the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Empire.
